Mission statement
To give and install sculpture by artist, Craig Frederick, to entities
(organizations, neighborhoods, institutions for worship, schools, clubs,
etc.) that have the need (can demonstrate the benefit), but do not have
the means to afford.
The premise
From The Remarks by Dr. Richard L. Judd, President Central Connecticut
State University
A Forum on Public Art/Produced by Craig Frederick
September 14, 2001
"...Public Art (in fact all art) opens up possibilities for all
of us to make unexpected and wonderful connections between the image,
sculpture, mural, or whatever combination of things it is, between that
art and our own lives, among other works of art, and between art as artifact
and other things we know about the human condition. The interpretation
and existence of public art helps us develop a well-educated citizenry,
able to analyze arguments, see connections, and make responsible interpretations
about the world: its past, present and future."
In my experience as a sculptor, in lectures, workshops, exhibitions,
and my own observations of people viewing the sculptures I have made,
I have noticed a surprising therapeutic value. I have seen the faces of
children living in difficult urban environments light up with wonder tugging
at their parents' hands to share in their delight and intrigue. I have
seen this same light among the faces of adults dealing with many of life's
misfortunes and/or personal ailments and I have witnessed unusually positive
reactions and responses from patients suffering from various forms of
brain trauma. Sculpture is so much more than decoration and can make a
valuable difference.
Even though some art is "Public," too many segments of the
world are not able to gain access and remain isolated from the above stated
value. The many "not-for-profit" institutions that serve these
populations are cash poor and totally dependent on contributions to meet
their immediate needs. Art can not fit on their wish list. Many of these
institutions and represented populations remain isolated from the more
fortunate. The HART Project can give the benefits of sculpture to these
populations, one at a time, and help bridge this gap of isolation.
How it works
For selected projects, I am able to donate my design and time/labor,
but unfortunately can not afford to donate the high costs of making sculptures.
With the participation of a benefactor (individual, group, or company
responsible for the project's expense budget), we are able to design,
make, and install a site specific sculpture to an approved applicant free
of charge to the applicant.

The Applicant: The Friendship Service Center. New Britain, CT.
The Benefactor: Dr. Anthony Lachman - philanthropist, community leader
& renowned cardiologist
The Site: Located on the corners of Arch Street, Grand and Prospect Street,
The Friendship Center's newly landscaped courtyard is an ideal setting
